JAVA & BALI TOUR REPORT 2025

11 - 26 August 2025

Trevor Ellery

Our Java and Bali Tour was once again a wonderful sampler of this beautiful corner of Indonesia.  We traversed the length and sometimes the breadth of Java, taking in forest clad volcanos, vibrant wetlands and several stunning National Parks.  We also visited the beautiful island of Bali and undertook an exploratory extension to Kalimantan in southern Borneo.  We focused on endemics and regional specialities and managed a vast haul, including such iconic species as Bali Starling, Black-browed Babbler, Javan Trogon, Javan Banded Pitta, Javan Cochoa, Javan Scops Owl, Salvadori’s Nightjar, Javan Frogmouth, Pink-headed Fruit Dove, Spotted Crocia, Javan Hawk-Eagle, Javan Coucal, Javan Blue-banded Kingfisher, Javan White-eye, White-capped Munia, Javan Plover, Javan Sparrow and many more. We also enjoyed some fine mammal experiences; with everything from majestic Banteng to confiding Horsfield’s Treeshrews and Black-eared Squirrels.  Primates were also well represented, with Moloch Gibbon and Proboscis Monkeys being especially appreciated.

Our tour started with an early morning trundle across the sprawling mega metropolis of Jakarta, which is thought to host a population of 33 million!  It was a rather murky sunrise but we soon pulled away from the city and began to climb into the foothills, swapping concrete skyscrapers for tea plantations and more humble abodes. A brief roadside stop produced a few of Java’s commoner species including the ubiquitous Cave Swiftlets, Tree Sparrows, Sooty-headed Bulbul and both Rock and Spotted Doves.  The abundant and even urban Tree Sparrows were somewhat surprising to those of the group from Western Europe, who have witnessed the strict rural nature and huge population crashes of that species in many EU countries!

We arrived in the park-like grounds of Cibodas botanical gardens in the late morning and quickly set about our first spell of birding.  We soon enjoyed Pygmy Bushtit, Sangkar White-eyes and nesting Black-winged Flycatcher Shrikes.  Velvet-fronted Nuthatch crept along the branches and Flame-fronted Barbets ranged through the canopy.  A female Sunda Brush Cuckoo was coaxed out and we had great scope looks at both Javan and Collared Kingfishers.  A pair of Ashy Drongos were seen briefly and we also enjoyed a couple of Cinereous Tits and our first Javan Munias, Long-tailed Macaques and Plantain Squirrels.

With some fairly persistent rain setting in, we birded in the immediate environs of the Lodge, where we added Javan Flowerpecker and plentiful Orange-spotted Bulbuls.

An afternoon walk produced some lovely West Javan Langurs and our first Little Pied Flycatchers.  Much scanning and scoping off the canopy and we were eventually able to locate and obtain reasonable views of several Yellow-throated Hanging Parrots.  We also located several rather confiding Pygmy Cupwings, which, perhaps emboldened by the rather wet and murky conditions, were foraging in the open. A skulking group of Crescent-chested Babblers were also noted and in the late afternoon we added the highly desired Sunda Thrush.  A nocturnal jaunt by the guides resulted in a pair of Javan Frogmouths and the need to get almost the whole group out of bed to go and see them!

The next day we began our ascent up the Gunung Gede volcano.  Before this though we had flight views of a Salvadori’s Nightjar at the Cibodas gardens.  The climb started well with a family party of Ferruginous Partridge feeding on the path and dodging the surprisingly plentiful Indonesian hikers. We followed this with Rufous-tailed Fantail, Pied and Trilling Shrike Babbler, Javan Blue Robin, and some skulking White-bibbed Babblers.  Mountain Tailorbird was teased out of the dense undergrowth, while our first Sunda Warblers proved rather confiding.  Javan Blue Whistling Thrushes skipped along the path and we even lured a Javan Tesia out into the open.  Javan Heleias ranged in the fruiting trees, as did some spectacular but introduced Fire-tufted Barbets and a couple of Banded Broadbills were also seen. A large flock of Sunda Minivets were a spectacular sight as they danced above us, while singles of Indigo Flycatcher and White-flanked Sunbird were a bonus. Both Lesser and Javan Shortwings were seen, although the Javan Shortwings proved especially skulking. We didn’t neglect to scan overhead, picking out several Giant Swiftlets soaring in the murk, while mammal additions included Javan Langur and Three-striped Ground Squirrel.

With the weather closing in we birded in the vicinity of the campsite adding Sunda Forktail, Snowy-browed Flycatcher and an obliging Northern Palm Civet. Some nocturnal birding produced a close calling Javan Scops Owl but no views were obtained.

The following morning we set off pre-dawn and quickly taped in a Javan Scops Owl, which gave good but brief views. We then climbed to another larger campsite, where we found Tawny-breasted Parrotfinch and a lovely Javan Cochoa. A pair of Sunda Island Thrushes were nesting and we also added the much desired Scaly (Horsfield’s) Thrush, which skulked in the leaf litter in a quiet corner.

We then gradually descended the mountain picking up Javan Trogon, Mountain Leaf Warbler, a nice group of Javan Fulvetta and a couple of Blue Nuthatches. Our first White-breasted Waterhen was also noted at a small lake, while a Crested Honey Buzzard overhead was a surprise.

In the evening some nocturnal birding at Cibodas again produced a Salvadori’s Nightjar, while a Buffy Fish Owl was also seen. A Javan Slow Loris was located, though buried so deep in a bamboo clump that it was hard to identify from the much obscured views.

The next morning some pre-dawn owling produced nice looks at a Sunda Scops Owl. We then transferred across to Gunung Halimum National Park. En route we again picked up some of Java’s commoner roadside birds, including House Swift, Pacific Swallow and our first White-breasted Woodswallow. As we drove into the Halimum protected area we were met by some stunning Moloch Gibbons. A rather tame Blue Whistling Thrush was around the accommodation and our second (more obliging) Javan Forktail foraged in the garden.

Heavy rain slowed birding in the afternoon but we did pick up Chestnut-breasted Malkoha and our first Scarlet Minivet with a small group of Sunda Minivets. Mixed flocks held Javan Leafbirds and a smart Orange-bellied Flowerpecker.

Some spotlighting after dark produced a roosting Orange-bellied Trogon and a skulking Spotted Giant Flying Squirrel.

The next morning we headed up a trail into the rather lovely primary forest. This produced a day time Orange-breasted Trogon, a Brown-throated Barbet high in the canopy, a lovely Rufous Piculet and a brief Crimson-winged Woodpecker. A pair of Zebra Woodpeckers at a nest were much appreciated and we also found a pair of Yellow-bellied Warblers and some fairly showy White-breasted Babblers. Spotted Crocia was a main target and we eventually managed very good views of a party ranging through the canopy. Pale Blue and Rufous-chested Flycatchers showed well, while we also added Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker, several Javan Sunbirds and a Streaky-breasted Spiderhunter. On the mammal front a couple of diminutive Black-eared Squirrels were a trip highlight and we also glimpsed our first Black Giant Squirrel.

In the afternoon scanning from the tea plantations produced a distant perched Javan Hawk-Eagle and a soaring Black Eagle. The plantations themselves held our first Striated Grassbird, Brown Prinia and Long-tailed Shrike. Several Ruddy Cuckoo-Doves and some flocks of Sumatran Green Pigeons flew past, while Dark-backed Imperial Pigeons flew over and also perched in distant trees. Our first group of Red Junglefowl were spotted downslope allowing scope views. Several Grey-rumped Swiftlets and Brown-backed Needletails and our first Eastern Red-rumped Swallow also cruised overhead.

The next morning we transferred across to central Java. We arrived in time to visit some wetlands in the evening. These held Scaly-breasted, Javan, White-headed and a small group of White-capped Munias.  Other commoner species included Glossy Ibis, Medium Egret, Javan Pond Heron, Cerulean Kingfisher, Small Minivet and several showy White-browed Crakes. Further scanning revealed Black-backed Swamphen, Purple Heron, Zitting Cisticola, several Javan Mynas and our first Zebra Doves. Waders were represented by Kentish Plover, Wood and Common Sandpiper and Greenshank.

We then retired to our hotel where dinner on the restaurant roof was interrupted by some lovely Savanna Nightjars overhead.

The following morning was spent at a stakeout for Javan Blue-banded Kingfisher which failed to produce, though our first Javan Banded Pitta was appreciated. Cutting our losses we headed south and managed to arrive at some wetlands near Yogyakarta in the late afternoon. We soon located a couple of Sunda Coucals and a flock of Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, despite the windy conditions. Otherwise we noted a few commoner species before retiring to our nearby Hotel.

The following morning we visited a second stake out for the Kingfisher. On the way a roadside stop produced a lovely Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker and our first Ornate Sunbird. It took quite some patience but we eventually enjoyed great views of an incredibly obliging Javan Blue-banded  Kingfisher, a real trip highlight. We had partly whiled away the time watching some tame and spectacular White-crowned and Javan Forktails, both truly stunning species which were popular with the photographers.

We then continued to Surabaya, where we had some time to enjoy birding around the mudflats, adding Javan Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Long-toed and Red-necked Stints and both Little and Whiskered Terns. A nice Slaty-breasted Rail showed well and Little Cormorants were plentiful. The extensive mangroves produced our first Freckle-breasted Woodpecker, Golden-bellied Gerygone and Malaysian Pied Fantail. A fairly confiding Javan Mongoose was also a minor mammal highlight.

The following morning we made a return visit to the same wetlands. We enjoyed good looks at White-shouldered Triller, Australasian Grebe, Siberian Sand Plover, Sunda Collared Dove, Pied Stilt, Common Tern, Sacred Kingfishers and a few Common Ioras. Despite much searching we were unable to locate Javan White-eye, which now seems very scarce on mainland Java.

A second site also failed to produce the White-eye though we did add Sunda Teal and both Yellow-bellied and Plain Prinias.

It was then a case of continuing east as we headed towards Baluran, situated at the very eastern limit of Bali. The journey was rather slow as we seemed to leave behind the modern motorways that had seemed to crisscross much of the country and became stuck on more minor, traffic clogged roads. The endless scenes of Javanese life and constant procession of colourful mosques kept us entertained and we arrived at our pleasant accommodation in the early evening.

A short nocturnal excursion nearby produced a Large-tailed Nightjar, on what was a lovely night in this remote part of Indonesia.

The following morning we visited Baluran NP where the abundant dry forest and savannah produced Green Imperial Pigeon, spectacular Green Peafowls, Green Junglefowl and a lovely flock of Oriental Pied Hornbills.

We followed this with Black-winged Myna, Common Flameback, skulking Grey-cheeked Tit-babblers and a flock of Java Sparrows! Beautiful Common Emerald Doves dashed past and plentiful Javan Deer ranged across the grassland, while a troop of East Javan Langurs were located in the forest. Our first Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher was also seen well, as were several Sunda Woodpeckers. A single Black-thighed Falconet that perched close to the road for an extended period was a trip highlight. Others birds seen along the road included Oriental Cuckooshrike, Black Drongo and both Common and Olive-backed Tailorbirds.

With the day heating up we retired to our Hotel for an early lunch, before transferring across to the much cooler, higher elevation Ijen plateau.  We spent the afternoon in a hide which allowed close views of Javan Banded Pitta, Lesser Shortwing, Horsfield’s Babbler and Snowy-browed Flycatcher but produced no sign of the hoped for Grey-breasted Partridge.

After a night in a pleasant coastal Hotel we returned to Ijen and tried a second hide. It didn’t take long before we were treated to some spectacular views of this beautiful galliform, while a brief Checker-throated Woodpecker was seen nearby.

We then birded along the road and some nearby trails, locating Aberrant and Javan Bush Warblers, a gorgeous male Pink-headed Fruit Dove, White-bellied Fantail and a Black-banded Barbet.  A calling Sunda Cuckoo posed for scope views, while a pair of majestic Wreathed Hornbills cruised overhead and several Sunda Cuckooshrikes moved with mixed flocks. Other highlights included a single female Tenggara Whistler, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, a nesting pair of Grey-and-Buff Woodpeckers and right at the end of the day, a pair of skulking Javan Scimitar Babblers.

The following morning we visited the spectacular Alas Purwo Nation Park in the far south east corner of Java. We were to enjoy breakfast with the Bantengs, as these impressive native cattle grazed the plain in front of the park headquarters. The birding was also productive and we located White-bellied Sea Eagle, Yellow-eared Barbet, Sunda Crow and Asian Glossy Starling. The forest edge and understorey also deserved attention with Black-headed, Ruby-throated and Cream-vented Bulbuls all being new. A hide allowed fantastic views of a couple of Javan Black-capped Babblers scurrying around in the leaf litter and perching on logs.

We then spent some time searching for Javan Blue Flycatcher, with a single bird eventually being glimpsed. We also added Black-naped Monarch and Orange-headed Thrush.

In the afternoon we took a ferry across the strait to the infamous island of Bali. Greater Crested Terns (including many Juveniles) were abundant during the crossing and we also added a single Black-naped Tern and a couple of Brown Boobys. As we pulled into Bali a group of five Lesser Adjutant could be seen on the estuary. We drove straight to the dry forest of Bali Barat NP and were soon adding new species. Both Coppersmith and Lineated Barbets showed well and several Pink-necked Green Pigeons gave perched views. A group of Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters were appreciated and a second stop added a skulking Javan Owlet.

In the late afternoon we saw our first Bali Mynas, just before heading to our rather luxurious hotel.

We started the next morning looking for Black-winged Myna (of the grey-rumped form) without success, though we did add Lesser Coucal and four fly over Large Flying Fox. We then moved on to the Park headquarters, where flocks of Bali Mynas put on quite a display. Further birding in the park produced a nice pair of Black-naped Fruit Doves, while a visit to a hide allowed great views of Racket-tailed Treepie, Horsfield’s Tree Shrew, Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Hair-crested Drongo and Fulvous-chested Jungle Flycatcher! Some nearby birding added Lemon-bellied White-eye and the obligatory Bali beach photo, albeit briefly!

In the late afternoon we made a stop at a wetland near the airport at Denpasar. This allowed us to add Little Pied Cormorant and Yellow-bellied Prinia amongst a selection of commoner wetland species. A single Large-billed Crow was seen nearby. Then all too suddenly the main tour was over with many of the group finishing at Denpasar and connecting with international flights.

The guide and one client returned to Jakarta for a brief night before catching an early flight to Kalimantan in southern Borneo.

The following morning after arriving in southern Kalimantan, it was a case of driving north and picking up a packed lunch before birding some karst forest. Despite much searching we failed to find the babbler on the first afternoon, we did though add Blue-throated Bee-eater, Red-throated Barbet, Black-eared Barbet, Ashy Tailorbird and some skulking Bold-striped Tit-Babblers. A troop of Proboscis Monkeys ranging through the canopy were an extension highlight.

The next morning we returned to the karst cliffs and this time, after locating a rough trail further into the habitat, we were soon enjoying great looks at a pair of the recently rediscovered Black-browed Babbler. They put on quite a show, at times dueting almost over our heads and bouncing from rock to rock in the rather unique, shady underworld that could be found in the lee of the impressive vertical limestone outcrops. Further birding at the site also added Plaintive Cuckoo, Dusky Munia, Black-bellied Malkoha and Green Iora.

After a quick lunch back in the town and Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker and Brown-throated Sunbird in an urban park, we drove out to some more remote forest. Birding along the road produced Plume-toed and Mossy-nest Swiftlets, Whiskered Treeswift, Silver-backed Spinetail, Greater Coucal, a lovely Black-and–yellow Broadbill and some smart Scaly-breasted Bulbuls. We also found a nesting pair of Buff-rumped Woodpeckers on the return drive.

Our final morning in Kalimantan involved a slow drive to the airport with some roadside birding in extensive wetlands. These produced Black-winged Kite, flocks of Streaked Weavers, a couple of White-throated Kingfishers and some lovely Chestnut Munias. A detour was also made to some mangroves, where Javan White-eye proved common! The final new bird of the trip was a pair of Brahminy Kites that passed over near the airport.
