The Ultimate In Birding Tours

Paul Smith

Paul Smith lives in Encarnación, Paraguay with his partner Carol and son Shawn. Paul trained as a zoologist, but after winning the Observer newspaper Young Travel Writer of the Year competition in 2000 he landed a job as an author for travel book company Rough Guides, giving him the opportunity to travel widely in Latin America and broadening his birding horizons. Resident in Paraguay since 2003, he now earns a living as a freelance author/zoologist and works closely with local conservation groups Guyra Paraguay and Pro Cosara, being a council member of the latter. He designed and managed the volunteer scheme ‘Mini-Guides to the Birds of Paraguay’ for Birdlife Partner Guyra Paraguay from 2004-2006 and established the website FAUNA Paraguay in 2007, an in-depth and rapidly growing online guide to the country’s fauna. In the same year he founded the research station Estación Ecológica de San Rafael (ECOSARA) in San Rafael National Park, the country’s most biodiverse sanctuary. Paul is the representative of the Neotropical Bird Club in Paraguay and co-author of the forthcoming Field Guide to the Birds of Paraguay. He writes widely on Paraguay and its fauna, and his work has appeared in a number of national and international publications.
