Welcome to Birdquest

Martin Benadie

Martin Benadie

Martin Benadie was born in Zimbabwe and currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa. After graduating from university with a commerce degree (his dissertation focused on the economic and social spin-offs of avitourism of course), he decided to pursue a career in the natural world and has since worked as a specialist birding guide and as an environmental consultant and eco-tourism advisor for Wilderness Safaris, Southern Africa's premier safari operator, for whom he still works when not leading birding tours for Birdquest. Martin’s has an extraordinary knowledge of Southern African birds and birding sites, but is also able to guide in a variety of other destinations in Africa and also Madagascar and India. He now has his sights set on mastering the Asia-Pacific avifauna. In 2013 he spent a 6 week stint in the Congo Basin rainforests of Odzala-Kokoua National  Park in the Republic of the Congo. This was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the wildlife intricacies of this fascinating area. In a southern African context he is a qualified safari wildlife guide at DEAT/FGASA Level 3 and an SKS birding guide. Martin’s favourite bird families include raptors, larks and the bizarre Malagasy vangas. Martin ably hosts photographic safaris (he is a keen bird photographer himself) and is knowledgeable in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Martin is also a published photo-journalist, and got into writing when he realised that he had spent the last 15 years travelling through some of Africa’s most pristine wilderness areas and that there were many stories to tell. He thought that powerful prose and revealing imagery could play a part in raising environmental awareness around Africa concerning its prized natural history and conservation plights. He is happiest spending his time wandering through off-the-beaten track places in Africa, the world’s last remaining ‘mega-wilderness’ in his opinion.
