Remote Henderson Island, with its endemic landbirds and rich seabird colonies (which include Henderson Petrel, that nests only here), is threatened by introduced rats. Rat eradication would ensure the survival of Henderson's rich avifauna. The project is a major one and, as well as a massive baiting exerecise in an extremely remote location and difficult terrain, requires taking a large number of Henderson Island Crakes into captivity, in case the remaining wild ones take the rat baits and perish.
The project is being co-ordinated by Braitain's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. At present there is still a serious funding shortfall, amounting to tens of thousands of Pounds. Donations both large and small are being solicited by the Society.
