NORTHERN ECUADOR 2010 was again a fantastic tour to this amazing country! We recorded 826 species which is only 9 less species from the ever biggest bird tour list of Birdquest (in the same country albeit not only the north!). It is hard to list all the goodies we saw but the 'bird of the trip' was an unexpected Harpy from La Selva's canopy tower. Check out a few image below, taken on the tour...and then read the report which is coming soon (János Oláh)!!!!
Our first day in the magnificent Mashpi reserve kicked off well with two fruiteaters. The first was the colourful Orange-breasted Fruiteater which is a real wet forest Chocó endemic (János Oláh).
...and the more subtle Scaled Fruiteater (János Oláh).
Other goodies in this reserve included Black-chinned Mountain Tanager (János Oláh).
...and a displaying Barred Hawk which landed right above us (János Oláh)!
In a different reserve we could watch a Lanceolated Monklet as long as we wanted (János Oláh)! Mega bird!
Very special Chocó birds in the Bellavista area included the colourful Toucan Barbet (János Oláh).
...the fantastic Plate-billed Mountain Toucan which we saw cutting up a 1meter long giant earthworm on the ground (János Oláh)...
...and the very localised Tanager Finch (János Oláh).
Our morning visit to the World famous 'Angel Paz antpitta forest' started with a superb show of displaying Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks still in twighlight (János Oláh)!
