Our spring tour to Texas, a big state with a land area larger than that of France, once again proved to be a great success. During our travels to the upper Texas coast, the Edwards Plateau and Big Bend National Park, we recorded 300 species, among them 38 species of American Wood-Warblers. Some of the highlights included Swainson’s Warbler, King Rail, Piping Plover, and Upland and Buff-breasted Sandpipers from the gulf coast, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers and the localized Bachman’s Sparrow of the pine woods, fabulous views of Golden-cheeked Warbler and Grey and Black-capped Vireos on the Edwards Plateau, Colima Warbler and Painted Redstart in the Chisos Mountains and Elf Owl and a dazzling male Lucifer Hummingbird also in Big Bend National Park. Near the Rio Grande we found a cooperative Long-billed Thrasher, several Couch’s Kingbirds and let’s not forget all those fabulous Greater Roadrunners!
