Welcome to Birdquest

Our recent tour to the avian paradise of Costa Rica served up a wonderful selection of species in a diverse range of tropical habitats. In the endemic rich mountains of the interior we found stunning Resplendent Quetzals, Volcano Juncos, Collared Whitestarts, Flame-throated Warblers and masses of hummingbirds including Violet Sabrewings, exquisite Magenta-throated Woodstars and Grey-tailed and Purple-throated Mountaingems. In the Pacific lowlands we saw numerous Scarlet Macaws, the rare Rufous-necked Woodrail, Black-and-white and Spectacled Owls, Ferruginous Pygmy Owl and Pacific Screech Owl while masses of waterbirds included stately Jabirus, bizarre Boat-billed Herons, Bare-throated Tiger Herons and Limpkins. In the foothills of the Caribbean slope we watched the gorgeous Snowcap plus Dull-mantled and Spotted Antbirds, Keel-billed Toucans and White-ruffed Manakins while the Caribbean lowlands, the richest area of all, produced several superb Great Green Macaws, Snowy Cotingas, Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, White-whiskered Puffbirds, Bat Falcon, Vermiculated Screech Owls and many others. Apart from rather damp day at Monteverde the weather was generally good, if a little breezy at times, and the tour logistics ran very smoothly. This tour really is the perfect introduction to Neotropical birding!
