Bird tours to the same destination year after year cannot always continue to get better and better, but it seems that they do in the case of our ‘Jaguars and Birds of Brazil’ tour. This year the tour was outstanding. Although we saw only four Jaguars, we had superb views of them all. We also had unbelievable views of two Maned Wolves and did remarkably well with some of the other mammals, notably Giant Anteater, Giant Otter, Brazilian Tapir and six species of monkey. Despite the fact that we were visiting southern Brazil in winter and the weather was unusually cold, the birding was superb and we were treated to a great selection of some of the finest birds that central and south-eastern Brazil have to offer. The Hyacinth Macaws in the Pantanal were as obliging as ever; we came across two of the great prizes at Intervales, Helmeted Woodpecker and Spotted Bamboowren, and although we had to struggle a bit, we eventually had good views of a Brazilian Merganser in the Serra da Canastra. Other birding highlights included Greater Rhea, Chestnut-bellied Guan, Bare-faced Curassow, Boat-billed Heron, Sunbittern, Sungrebe, Red-legged Seriema, Long-tailed Ground Dove, Golden-collared Macaw, Golden-capped Parakeet, Least Nighthawk, Long-trained Nightjar, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Saffron Toucanet, Great Rufous and Scalloped Woodcreepers, Spot-backed, Tufted and White-bearded Antshrikes, Mato Grosso Antbird, Cryptic Antthrush, Rufous Gnateater, Slaty Bristlefront, Collared Crescentchest, Sharp-tailed Grass Tyrant, Streamer-tailed Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Hooded Berryeater, Cinnamon-vented Piha, Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin, White-naped Xenopsaris, White-banded Mockingbird, Ochre-breasted Pipit, Green-chinned Euphonia, and Brown, Azure-shouldered, Diademed and Chestnut-backed Tanagers. Our trip list of 397 was unexceptional, but the quality more than made up for the lack of quantity.
