This year’s Borneo tour produced a wonderful collection of Bornean and Sundaic specialities. Whitehead’s Broadbill was clear winner of Bird of the Trip as we enjoyed multiple excellent encounters with this remarkable bird in the highlands of Sabah where its namesake Trogon and Spiderhunter were also seen very well along with the enigmatic Everett’s Thrush and other tricky upland species such as the gorgeous Fruithunter, perky Bornean Stubtail and Red-breasted Partridge. In the lowlands we enjoyed prolonged views of the much-wanted Bornean Bristlehead at the Lower Kinabatangan where a spotlighted Bornean Ground Cuckoo was a great bonus and Storm’s Storks, Jerdon’s Bazas and many others showed well. Blue-headed and Black-headed Pittas gave fine views in the steamy lowlands along with the likes of hunting Bat Hawks, spotlighted Buffy Fish Owls, Large and Blyth’s Frogmouths, Large Green Pigeons, Crested Jay and seven species of Hornbill. Those who stayed on for the extension to neighbouring Sarawak were rewarded with great views of all of our top targets, namely Bornean and Dulit Frogmouths, Black Oriole, Mountain Serpent Eagle, Hose’s Broadbill and Grey-breasted Babbler. Hook-billed Bulbul at Klias Peatswamp, just over the border back in Sabah, was a very welcome addition to the Birdquest life list. Mammals featured prominently too with several Bornean Orang-utans seen very well, four different Leopard Cats, the weird Colugo, Sunda Slow Loris, Bornean Gibbons and Proboscis Monkeys just some of the many highlights.
